This week
DFA national put out the call to its membership to decide if DFA should take on
Walmart. Here in New Jersey,
there are already several cases where Walmart is destroying a sense of
community. Where I live in Edison
Township, Mayor George Spadoro has
fast-tracked a new Walmart
Supercenter through the
township planning & zoning boards without any public notification. I
am currently working as Field Director for Mayor Spadoro’s opponent in the June
7th Democratic Primary, Jun Choi (www.junchoi.com).
Here in Edison, we are taking on the backroom politics of the
current mayor and his deals with developers and special interests. The
township law states that residents within 200 ft of a new contruction must have
prior notification. The plot of land slated for the development of the
Walmart has no residential parcels within the 200 ft radius, so no one was told
anything about it until after its planning board application was passed.

For the past 60 days
I have worked 12+ hour days as Field Director for the Jun Choi campaign. We’ve
been viciously attacked by our opposition on TV and by direct mail, its
up to the grassroots to set the record straight this weekend. This race in winnable, but it will take the
energy of the grassroots to GET OUT THE VOTE.
I remember the energy Dean for America had during the summer and fall of 2003, if that kind of energy can converge on EDISON TOWNSHIP this weekend and on Election Day,
we can win this race – defeating machine politics and electing a responsible
progressive Democrat, Jun Choi

Read his statements from last night’s debate on WCTC:
"Having grown up in Edison,
I believe that government, for too long, has been dominated by developers and
special interest. That is why our
community is so overdeveloped and congested and why our municipal tax rate has
grown more than 161% under the current administration.
We can stop overdevelopment by upgrading the Master Plan and
appointing new Planning board members committed to enhancing Edison’s quality
of life – we can stabilize taxes by professionalizing township operations, and
securing our fair share of state aid.
I am running for Mayor to usher in a new era of politics
that is based on directly meeting the needs of our citizens, not special interests,
and restoring the basic integrity of government.
I am running for Mayor to end machine politics – a politics
based on fear and intimidation, and where municipal employees routinely give
political contributions in return for favored treatment.
To hide this reality, Mr. Spadoro has misled and misinformed
the public for too long. He makes
baseless, personal attacks to distract voters from the real issues that matter.
We need a government that is professionally run protecting
taxpayers and rebuilding the quality of life that made Edison a great place to live, to work and to raise a family. For these reasons, I ask for your support on
June 7.
Mr. Spadoro has misled, mismanaged and misinformed. There would be no need to viciously attack me
if Edison were moving in the right direction
and he were so proud of his record.
After nearly twelve years, the fact is that George Spadoro has overdeveloped
our community to serve his developer friends.
He has raised our taxes 161%.
Under his watch, Edison was the subject
of multiple federal and state investigations.
60 Minutes ran a special on the corrupt Edison Police Force and an
international movie named “ Edison ” about the
same subject will be aired later this year.
He has repeatedly been fined after violating election law. Thomas Alva Edison, who this Township is
named after, would be rolling in his grave right now.
This is machine politics.
This is the politics that have left many in our community behind. This is the politics that have turned so many
away from public service. This is the
politics that is destroying our democracy and making so many of us cynical
about our future.
Help me get elected on June 7 and we can turn this
around. We can institute professional
government that focuses on quality delivery of service."
