Straight New Jerseyans Supporting Marriage Equality |

On Thursday, November 10, 2005, New Jersey for Democracy co-sponsored an event with our allies, Garden State Equality, called "Straight New Jerseyans Supporting Marriage Equality."
Special Guest Speakers included: Mayor Jason West, 28, who at 26 and a house painter, puppeteer and Green Party candidate was elected Mayor of New Paltz, NY and made world headlines the following year when he began to marry same-sex couples (he was arrested). Mayor West gave a passionate speech about the meaning of equality to all of us. Speakers also included Corzine media manager Brad Lawrence, who gave some behind-the-scenes talk about the campaign.
The event included a pageant of progressive organizations, including New Jersey for Democracy and local DFA groups from around the state to stand for the proposition that equality is a progressive's issue, and not all straight people think their marriages are threatened by gay families.
Held at the Unitarian Church of Montclair, this was a stirring event if ever there was one.
